TV Show from the 80s or 90s with possible talking dog?

I am trying to recall the name of a television show that may or may
not have had a talking dog (perhaps viewers were just able to hear the
dog's thoughts?).

One episode that I remember involved the family being locked out of
the house. The family consisted of a young blond pre-teen boy, his
mother and it is possible there were other characters, too. The dog
was an intelligent dog, perhaps a golden retriever... for some reason
I think he may have been a relative (uncle?) of the family's; the name
"Jack" rings a bell, but may not relate to this show. I remember a
laugh track, and a red Hawaiian shirt (on the dog?) but these, also,
could be inaccurate memories.
